Our Story

Carpet Capital Musical Theatre began as the ACT2 team in partnership with Artistic Civic Theatre, our local community theatre in Dalton. As ACT2, our students proudly represented Northwest Georgia at the Junior Theater Festival, competing with productions of The Lion King JR., The Little Mermaid JR., and Seussical JR.

In early 2026, our team made the decision to adopt a new name that better reflects the community and region we proudly represent — the Carpet Capital of the World. From that vision, Carpet Capital Musical Theatre was born. While our name changed, our mission remained the same: to provide students across Northwest Georgia with exceptional musical theatre training, meaningful performance opportunities, and unforgettable experiences on and off the stage.

Our Mission

Carpet Capital Musical Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and developing young performers through high-quality musical theatre training and competition. Our mission is to cultivate excellence in performance while encouraging teamwork, confidence, creativity, and character both on and off the stage. Students from across Northwest Georgia — including Dalton, Chatsworth, and Ringgold — come together to represent our region on the world stage at the Junior Theater Festival, gaining unforgettable experiences and lifelong skills through the power of musical theatre.

Our Directors

Mary McLawhorn

Mary is a dedicated teacher and theater director with more than 28 years of experience teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Throughout her career, she has inspired young learners both in the classroom and on the stage. For the past 10 years, Mary has directed school musicals, helping students discover confidence, creativity, and teamwork through performance. In addition to her work in schools, she has also spent the last decade directing youth theater productions within the community, mentoring young performers and fostering a love for the arts in audiences of all ages. Mary’s favorite role however is being a wife and mama to her amazing husband Mac and her fabulous teenagers Will and Charlotte.

Heidi Long

With more than 10 years of experience as music director for children’s musicals, Heidi Long brings passion, creativity, and dedication to her role as music director and co-founding member of Carpet Capital Musical Theatre. A lifelong vocalist and musician, Heidi was a member of the Georgia All-State Choir, was a member of her college traveling choir, currently sings in musicals and cabarets in community theatre and with multiple choirs at her church, and works closely with the church youth choir program as well. She has spent 26 years as an educator and has remained actively involved in community theatre throughout that time, inspiring young performers both on and off the stage. Above all, she loves spending time with daughters Morgan and Molly and husband Ted, whose support encourages her artistic journey.
